Green Bay Packers Adjustment 2 – Play action and more middle of the field throws

The easy thing to say here, which I’m sure many people are expecting for Sunday, is that every throw will be quick and in rhythm, with Green Bay rarely trying to push it down the field. That very well might happen, but I have some other thoughts.

First, play-action is going to be a big part of the offense. If they run the ball as much as I expect, the Chiefs’ defense will start to get really aggressive, and the Green Bay Packers are going to use it against them. I’m not just talking about some simple play-action rollout where he dumps it to the tight end for three yards, either. They’ll definitely do that at some point, but I expect them to take some shots down the field. Marquez Valdes-Scantling and his 4.37 40-time are back at least to practice this week, and if he’s in the lineup, they have to give him a chance to do what he does best.

Finally, the big difference I am expecting this week in the passing game is where on the field the throws are going. Rodgers absolutely loves throwing to the edges of the field, especially to his favorite target, Davante Adams. He does it tactically and without surgical precision, working off the unreal connection he’s made with Adams, so it works well. However, for most quarterbacks, throwing to the edges is riskier because the ball has to be in the air longer, and the defense has more time to close on it. That’s why I think we’ll see a lot more to the middle of the field when the Packers do elect to drop back and pass. Unfortunately, Robert Tonyan, who is arguably the biggest middle threat for Green Bay, is injured, so we might see a heavy dosage of Big Dog Marcedes Lewis or Josiah Deguara.
