As the Green Bay Packers are dealing with their own issues at cornerback (they’re waiting for the results of medical testing on stud Jaire Alexander), there’s other cornerback news across the NFL that could be of interest to them. The New England Patriots surprisingly released All-Pro corner Stephon Gilmore and the Packers are reportedly interested in his services.

Early Wednesday morning, Adam Schefter reported the Patriots were surprisingly releasing Gilmore. The 31-year-old defensive back has made three All-Pro teams and was the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year.

However, he and the Patriots have been going at it for quite some time now.

Gilmore was getting paid just $7 million this season so he sat out training camp in an attempt to get a larger contract. That backfired and New England fined him and placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform list instead. You see, Gilmore played in only 11 games last year due to a quad injury that’s continued to linger into this season. The good news is he’s expected to return to playing form within the next few weeks.

The Green Bay Packers are reportedly “expected to show interest” in All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore was just released by the Patriots.

The Packers are extremely limited financially and there will assuredly be multiple suitors for Gilmore’s services. That could drive up the price for whoever he signs with, however, PFF’s Doug Kyed reports Green Bay is one of the teams “expected to show interest.”

The Packers are all in on this season and should explore any and every avenue to acquire an All-Pro caliber player.

Before Alexander’s injury, their resources were probably better spent elsewhere. Unfortunately, the severity is still not known and there’s a very real possibility he could miss most if not the rest of the 2021 season. That would be a huge blow for a team starting a rookie cornerback opposite Alexander and whose other guy–Kevin King–has been extremely inconsistent in both his availability and ability.

Next. Packers: positional grades at quarter mark. dark

There’s a lot that goes into negotiations behind the scenes, including whether Gilmore would even want to come to Green Bay. But you can trust that Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst will be trying his damndest to get Gilmore in the green and gold.
