Packers’ surprise on 53-man roster: Cutting Christian Uphoff and Innis Gaines

Another positional battle took place at safety where Christian Uphoff and Innis Gaines were going at it all training camp. Both guys flashed potential as the fifth safety and appeared to be, at the very least, special teams’ contributors.

Green Bay didn’t see it that way and let both guys go. That leaves them with Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos as the starters and Vernon Scott and Henry Black as the backups. Scott has missed the past two weeks with a hamstring injury, but this likely signals he’s ready to return. It will be worth watching to see if they get one or both guys on their practice squad and activate them throughout the season.
