Predicting Packers’ top positional battles: Safety

The Packers suddenly have a nice group of safeties, even if they’re lacking a third guy with starting potential. Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are one of the top duos on the entire NFL. Meanwhile Henry Black, Vernon Scott, Christian Uphoff and Innis Gaines is a nice, deep group.

Black and Scott likely have their spots secured heading into cut day on Tuesday which means it all comes down to Gaines and Uphoff. Both players have balled out this preseason and have seemingly come out of nowhere. It will be a great story for whoever makes it.

Unfortunately, it can only be one, and my prediction is Uphoff. He flashed the most on special teams, where his athleticism allowed him to make an impact on coverages. That’s what Green bay needs most from its fifth safety spot considering all their struggles in that aspect over the last few years.
