Packers on outside of roster heading into final preseason game: 2. Jace Sternberger, tight end
It’s been a hectic ride for 2019 third-round pick Jace Sternberger. He’s never been able to fully grasp the offense–even drawing the public ire of his coaches for this feat–and seems in a continued free-fall down the depth chart.
Sternberger has missed time in each of his first two seasons due to injury. To make matters worse, he was a healthy inactive down the stretch and into the playoffs last year. That hurts.
The position is suddenly crowded above him with Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis and Josiah Deguara all shoe-ins for the roster. Dominique Dafney probably has the edge due to his blocking prowess considering how much Matt LaFleur emphasizes that in his tight ends. To make matters worse, Sternberger has a two-game suspension to start the season. General manager Brian Gutekunst has shown he’s not afraid to cut ties with draft mistakes and Sternberger could be next.
