The Milwaukee Brewers are on pace to win the most regular season games in franchise history. Still, it’s a surprise to see one major publication not just list them as a favorite to win the World Series, but THE favorites.

Milwaukee heads into Thursday night’s games with a 74-47 record and a 9.5 game lead in the National League Central–by far the biggest lead in the NL.

That .612 win percentage would also be a franchise-best and puts them on pace for a 99-win season. Their previous best is 96 wins, coming both in the 2011 and 2018 teams (it took the Brewers an extra game to get their 96th win in 2018 in a tie-breaker with the Chicago Cubs).

Regardless, they only have the third-best record in their league which is why it’s somewhat surprising to see The Athletic list the Brewers as the World Series’ favorites.

The Milwaukee Brewers are enjoying one of the most successful seasons in franchise history and one major publication listed them as THE World Series’ favorites.

Rustin Dodd and Andy McCollough run a monthly article where they list MLB teams in a series of tiers based on different categories. This month it was most likely to win the World Series. They separate teams into eight tiers including The Favorites, The Dodgers, and Dangerous, If In The Tournament.

There are five teams in The Favorites category with the Brewers obviously at number one. The authors cite the terrifying three-headed monster that is Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff as one of the main reasons they believe they’re the favorite. All three pitchers have stepped up as aces this year and is unquestionably the best 1-2-3 punch of starting pitchers in the MLB.

They also cite Craig Counsell, who they say, “some consider Craig Counsell the best manager in the game” as another deciding factor. Lastly, the Brewers’ third-best NL record will also come in their favor as Milwaukee would miss the vaunted Wild Card opponent and get to face the NL East winner if the standings hold.

It would be amazing if two teams from Milwaukee win championships in 2021 (the Milwaukee Bucks being the first). There’s obviously still a lot that needs to happen before we can seriously consider the Brewers as champions, but it’s nice to see them getting recognition from The Athletic.
