Green Bay Packers: Predicting the 5 Players Cut on Tuesday
By Paul Bretl
DeAndre Thompkins – WR
After the Green Bay Packers’ annual family night practice, I did note that DeAndre Thompkins did make a few nice plays. However, I have him on this list because there are already four of five receivers — which he is not one of — competing for what is potentially just one roster spot.
Thompkins was on the field for nine offensive snaps against Houston with one target and an additional four snaps on special teams. Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Amari Rodgers are all locks, while Devin Funchess, Malik Taylor, Equanimeous St. Brown, Juwann Winfree, and Reggie Begelton are competing for that sixth receiver spot on the depth chart. It’s just simply a crowded room.
I also want to bring up Chris Blair, who I did not mention above, but the reason I don’t have him as a cut candidate at this point is that he is under contract in 2022, according to Over the Cap, even though he was signed to a futures deal in January. So that tells me that there is something there that Green Bay likes about him.
Zack Johnson – OL
This was a difficult decision to make, but I went with an offensive lineman given the sheer depth that the Green Bay Packers have at the position. Zack Johnson was signed as an undrafted rookie in 2020 out of North Dakota State, where he played both guard and tackle and had a very productive career, being named a second-team All-American at right tackle in 2018 and a first-team All-American at right guard the following season.
Johnson didn’t take any snaps against the Texans, although it needs to be pointed out that Jon Dietzen, Coy Cronk, and Jacob Capra didn’t either. However, in making this prediction, I’m going to afford more leniency to the undrafted rookies not seeing any snaps than I will Johnson who is in his second season with the same team.
