The Green Bay Packers kick off their preseason opener on Saturday night against the Houston Texans. And despite numerous veterans unlikely to suit up, there is still a lot at stake for some of them.

The NFL shortened its preseason to just three games this year due to adding a 17th regular season game to the slate. That means training camp and these three games are extremely valuable to the front office and coaching staff evaluating the players and the guys trying to make the final roster.

For some rookies, this is their first chance to impress their coaches. For other veterans, their time is dwindling down. Let’s check out four veterans who may be on their last straw with the Packers.

4. Jace Sternberger

The Packers are suddenly loaded at tight end. Robert Tonyan had a breakout year in 2020 and seems to be a star in the making. Marcedes Lewis is back again and has all the trust in the coaching staff when it comes to blocking. Dominique Dafney and Josiah Deguar also appear to be in the coach’s good graces.

Where does that leave 2019 third-round pick Jace Sternberger? Sternberger has never really been able to get it going in the NFL. He’s not the most athletic player, but does have good after-the-catch ability. He’ll have to showcase that to the extreme against the Texans to force Matt LaFleur’s hand in keeping him around over Dafney.
