Dexter Williams – RB

I have to admit; I may have counted out Dexter Williams of that RB3 battle a bit too early. While he doesn’t possess the same talent level or ceiling as Kylin Hill or Patrick Taylor, there is something to be said about his familiarity and understanding of the Matt LaFleur offense now that he’s in his third season.

"“Dexter, he’s another guy that I think has come so far,” said LaFleur via Packers.com. He’s one of the hardest workers that we have on this football team.”"

During his rookie campaign, you could tell that Williams lost the trust of this coaching staff with his struggles as a pass-catcher as well as in pass protection–two very important areas for any running back in this offense.

Given that the pads just came on, I can’t fully speak to how well Williams has been as a blocker; the keys for him at this point are being in the correct spots and identifying blitzers, but he does look much improved as a pass-catcher, making a few plays out of the backfield.

As of now, I’d still say that it will be an uphill battle for him to make the 53-man roster over Hill or Taylor, but Williams is off to a nice start during training camp, and at the minimum, he’s at least put himself in the conversation.
