Interior defenders don’t typically generate a lot of love or hype from media and fans. Instead, they do the dirty work inside and largely go unnoticed when unless they make the rare splash play like a sack or tackle for loss. However, that doesn’t make them any less important.

The Green Bay Packers have one of the best interior defenders in the NFL, nonetheless the NFC North. And even he doesn’t get the love he deserves. Such is the life in the nasty trenches of the NFL.

Similar to the wide receiver rankings, I’m sorting the top four players at this position regardless of the team they’re on (once again, sorry Detroit Lions). Without further ado, here are the top four interior defenders in the NFC North.

Interior linemen are typically underrated in the NFL, but here’s how the Green Bay Packers’ top lineman stacks up against the rest of the NFC North.

4. Michael Pierce, Minnesota Vikings

The Packers were reportedly interested in Michael Pierce during the offseason of 2020, but he ultimately decided to sign with the Minnesota Vikings. He then opted out last season due to covid-19 which has led some people to forget about him. However, he’s one of the best run-stuffers in all of football and will help the Vikings’ defense return to its vaunted ways. He may not make a bunch of splash plays, but his teammates will certainly feel his presence.

3. Dalvin Tomlinson, Minnesota Vikings

Another free agent signing for Minnesota, Dalvin Tomlinson comes over from the New York Giants and slides into a 4-3 defense. Minnesota’s front four is extremely nasty and Tomlinson only adds to their skills. He’s not a perfect fit next to Pierce, but there’s no denying his abilities.

2. Akiem Hicks, Chicago Bears

Akiem Hicks is on the wrong side of 30 and his best years are certainly behind him. However, that doesn’t mean he still isn’t a very good player. Hicks can be a dominant pass-rusher from the inside and can quickly disrupt a quarterback’s timing by pushing the offensive line right into his face. Hick’s sack numbers have been down the last two years and he’ll look to bounce back to his usual production.

1. Kenny Clark, Green Bay Packers

Kenny Clark may not be a household name outside of Green Bay, but you better start recognizing his game. At just 25-years-old, he’s already been in the NFL for five years and continues to get better and better. He can dominate by eating up blockers, beating his man one-on-one in the run game and getting after the quarterback. He makes everyone around him better by sucking up so much attention. Look for Clark to a monster 2021 campaign.
