Green Bay Packers Last 10 Drafts Ranked: No. 6 Class of 2020
By Kenny Jilek
Tier 3 – Simon Stepaniak, Vernon Scott, Jonathan Garvin
Simon Stepaniak was the final offensive lineman taken in the sixth round for the Pack. Like Hanson, he didn’t see any time on the field, and keeping his job will also be tough will Royce Newman and Cole Van Lanen coming from the draft as well.
Vernon Scott surprised a lot of people last season by being a great special teams place and even making some impact plays on defense. When he was picked in the 7th round, many analysts said he should have gone undrafted and didn’t have the talent to warrant a pick, but he proved those doubters wrong. He played in 15 games and became the regular dime safety, making two tackles for loss and a sack. This season, he could stay in that same role or even challenge for the nickel safety role, playing in the box on more passing downs and getting a chance to make even more big plays on the defensive side of the ball. He could be a great seventh-round find and diamond in the rough if he can build on last season.
Finally, there’s Jonathan Garvin, who comes into camp in a big position battle for the fourth edge rusher spot. Last year, he played 85 defensive snaps and made five tackles, but he’ll be looking for more in year two. It’ll be a competition to watch, with the top three spots locked in and potentially only one more roster spot open in that position.
The Green Bay Packers could take five edge players if they really like a couple, but the number four guy would have much more of a chance for some real blitz chances. If he can lock up that spot and keep progressing, he could keep climbing the depth chart in future years.
