Packers who could receive contract extension 4: Za’Darius Smith

The third member of the Packers’ 2019 free-agent class on this list (spoiler: there won’t be a fourth) has garnered the most attention from fans and the media. Za’Darius Smith immediately had a positive impact on the locker room and has an infectious personality that rubs off on others.

Oh, and it helps that he’s a darn good football player as well. Smith may not have repeated the huge numbers he put up in 2019, but he certainly demanded tons of attention from opposing offensive linemen. With Rashan Gary and others ascending, don’t be surprised if Smith has another monster year.

If you think his cap hit this year is high ($14.6 million) wait until you see what it is next year ($28.1 million). The Packers will absolutely try to find a way to reduce that in 2022 while also keeping him around for a few more years. A contract extension would be a great way to achieve both agenda items.
