7 Packers who could receive contract extensions before training camp
Packers who could receive contract extension 6: Robert Tonyan
Robert Tonyan’s career earnings are pointing straight up. After only making $750,000 a year ago, he’ll get paid $2.35 million this year with a big payday looming if he can repeat his 2020 on-the-field production.
In 2020, he caught 52 receptions for 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns–all career-highs. Now, Matt LaFleur and his staff want to diversify Tonyan’s route tree and his playmaking abilities which means he could be in for an even bigger season. If he does so, he’ll get paid by someone.
The Packers could try to get ahead of the game and sign him before he has another breakout season. However, their 2022 salary cap is already ugly looking and if you add in a huge raise for Tonyan things will get very dicey for Green Bay. They would have to make subsequent moves next offseason to get below the legal number.
