Green Bay Packers Last 10 Drafts Ranked: #8 Class of 2017
By Kenny Jilek
Tier 2 – Josh Jones, Montravius Adams, Vince Biegel
Tier 2 in this draft is pretty much the disappointment tier. Second and third-round picks are valued highly and expected to perform as such. Even Biegel as a fourth-round pick was early in the round and at 108 that’s still a spot where you should get some production.
Josh Jones was given a chance to be a big impact player in his rookie year, playing 70 percent of defensive snaps. He racked up five tackles for loss, picked off a pass and even had two sacks from the safety spot. As physical as he could be in the box, he wasn’t good enough in coverage for the Packers to keep playing him so often and his snaps dipped to 47 percent in year two. The next year, they waived him during the preseason and it took him a year, but he found his footing with the Jaguars in 2020 and started 13 games for them and had a career-high 83 tackles. There’s still plenty of time for Jones to turn his career around and find his niche, it just won’t be for the Green Bay Packers.
Montravius Adams played out his entire rookie contract in Green Bay. The most snaps he got in a season was 212, which accounted for just 20 percent of defensive snaps that year. Once in a while he would flash that potential that the Packers drafted him for and he made two tackles for loss in 2020, but it wasn’t enough to keep him around and the Packers let him walk this offseason, where he signed with the New England Patriots. Maybe he’ll figure things out there, but after four years of trying and failing in Green Bay it doesn’t seem likely.
There was one REALLY good edge rusher in this draft class from Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the Packers passed on T.J. Watt in round two and waited a few rounds to get Vince Biegel. He didn’t do much in Green Bay or New Orleans in his second year, but in 2019 with the Dolphins he had 13 QB hits, 7 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and an interception, showing he might have something to offer an NFL team. He was on the IR for the entirety of 2020, but he’ll be coming back this year looking to build on his 2019 success.
