It seems like ages ago when ESPN’s Adam Schefter had “breaking news” that Aaron Rodgers was unhappy with the Green Bay Packers and wanted out. I put breaking news in quotes, and I’ll explain why later.

Schefter, who appeared on NFL Live on Tuesday, made a bold statement about the Packers this season.

"“They [Packers] know that if he is not back that they will be one of the worst teams in football. And if he [Aaron Rodgers] is back they will be amongst the best for a chance to compete for a Super Bowl title.”"

I highly doubt the Packers will be one of the worst teams in the NFL if Rodgers isn’t under center for a single snap in 2021. Yes, nobody knows what Jordan Love can do because he has never taken a snap in an NFL game. Not even a preseason contest.

I find it hard to believe though, that the Packers, who had seven Pro Bowl players a season ago, including five on the offensive side of the ball, would be one of the worst teams in the league. Not a chance.

They have arguably the best wide receiver in the game in Davante Adams, a top-5 running back in Aaron Jones and a potential future left tackle Hall of Famer in David Bakhtiari all returning. Even if Love is the Packers quarterback this upcoming season, those three players around him, and an aggressive defense, are enough to help win more than enough games to be a bottom feeder.

Green Bay’s saga all began at 2:19 pm on April 29 when Schefter reported that Rodgers was disgruntled and didn’t want to return. I get that it was news, but calling it “breaking news” on NFL Live was a bit far-fetched, in my opinion, and here is why.

A week later, Schefter appeared on the Dan Patrick Show to discuss his announcement of Rodgers wanting out. The hardest part to understand, and even Dan Patrick was confused and taken aback by Schefter’s comments, is that there wasn’t a single source for this news, and it supposedly didn’t come from either the Packers or Rodgers.

It was Shefter feeling that the afternoon before the first round of the NFL Draft was ‘the time’ for breaking news. How ironic is that timing?

Okay, Rodgers is unhappy in some fashion or another with the Packers front office. Nobody knows what the true story is because he hasn’t spoken, and the Packers front office hasn’t talked about any details about the relationship, which they shouldn’t.

We can all speculate as to what will happen in the coming month-plus before training camp starts in late July. There are a lot of scenarios to think about, talk about, and debate about. Only the Packers and Rodgers can smooth out their rocky relationship.

Dial it back to the Wednesday before the NFC Championship Game, and Rodgers made a somewhat memorable comment at the time, saying, “My future is a beautiful mystery, I think.”

His future is a beautiful mystery, and it has a lot of people making some bold comments these days.
