Defensive Line of Scrimmage Players

Carlo Kemp – EDGE – Michigan

Keeping in the theme of versatility in undrafted free agents, the Green Bay Packers brought in Carlo Kemp, who played everywhere on the Michigan line from nose tackle to edge. He’s definitely not big enough to play defensive tackle in the NFL at only 6’2″ 281 pounds, but he has good short quickness and could be an option as an interior pass rusher on passing downs.

He struggled to hold his ground on the interior in run situations due to his lack of bulk and strength, but if he’s being blocked by tight ends on the edge, that could prove to be less of an issue.

When you look at his pass rushes, he doesn’t have a refined game, somewhat similar to his former teammate Rashan Gary when he came to the Green Bay Packers as a rookie. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the explosive physical tools that Gary possesses, but he gets off the line quickly and has enough experience on the interior to understand taking on big blockers and how to navigate his way to a running back in the run game.

Jack Heflin – DL – Iowa

Finally, we have Jack Heflin, who could compete for a spot and has a chance, like Uphoff, by virtue of positional need. Other than Kenny Clark, the interior defensive line has been subpar for some time, and they didn’t do much else this offseason to help the position.

He has good size, standing 6’3″ and weighing in at 304 pounds. This makes him a tough boulder to move in the trenches, and he can mess up offensive run schemes just by not getting moved backward. He doesn’t have a great first step and sometimes plays with his pads pretty high, making it easier on offensive linemen, which are both issues, and especially the pad level needs to be corrected.

He does have a pretty good bull rush and get push his man right into the quarterback’s lap if given the chance. With some pretty weak competition, if he can figure out how to stay low and let himself be an immovable object on the line of scrimmage, he could provide some value and make the team.
