With an interesting summer yet to playout for the Green Bay Packers, they’ll have a number of tough decisions to make on the margins of their roster. Decisions that will have major implications on their atrocious special teams unit and the future success of their team.

For the most part, Green Bay’s roster is fairly well-balanced. However, there are a couple of situations where they might have to cut a talented player instead of keeping too many guys at one position. Take tight end, for example, where they have five guys who will likely make a strong case to remain on the final roster. Do they really want to keep five tight ends and sacrifice depth at another position? Wide receiver and cornerback are two other instances where they will have to make difficult decisions one way or another.

With most of OTAs and all of training camp and preseason to play out, let’s preview four veterans who could be release candidates when it’s decision-making time.

For a number of reasons, these four veterans could be in danger of not making the Green Bay Packers’ final 2021 roster.

Packers’ veteran who might not make the roster 4. Devin Funchess

The Packers are returning their top four wide receivers (Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, Equanimous St. Brown, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling) plus third-round draft pick Amari Rodgers. You have to think those five guys are ahead of Funchess on the depth chart. Malik Taylor is also a serviceable fifth or sixth wide receiver. Will Green Bay have a need to keep Funchess if he’s not going to play on offense or special teams?

If the Packers waive Funchess after June 1st, they’ll save $1.2 million in cap space. Despite already agreeing to a contract restructure earlier in the offseason, they could decide to make this valuable cap-saving move and let Funchess walk.
