Clear More Cap Space

To get under the lowered salary cap this offseason, it took a few roster cuts, a number of contract restructures, and a pair of pay cuts as well. While the Green Bay Packers were able to get there as they currently sit about $2.61 million under the salary cap, according to Over the Cap, there is more work that needs to be done.

There are several upcoming expenses that the $2.61 million figure does not account for. For starters, that dollar amount is for the top-51 contracts on the roster, and as we are all aware, there are 53 players on an NFL roster. Green Bay still needs to sign their draft class as well as the practice squad, have funds available for any in-season spending, and of course, they will need cap space if they are going to make a free agent signing or two–we will get to that shortly.

So how does Green Bay go about making that additional cap space? Well, they have a few options, and as Gutey told reporters via Acme Packing Co. before the draft, “there are a lot of contracts that we will need to address over the next 4 to 5 months.”

A few contracts that they could work on include extensions for Za’Darius Smith, Adrian Amos, and Davante Adams. As well as for Aaron Rodgers–but we will have to see how that plays out. Or perhaps there are some post-June 1st cuts. Some names to watch are Josh Jackson and Oren Burks. Any one of these moves would clear cap space for the 2021 season, and that is something that has to be done at some point.
