Green Bay Packers 7 Round 2021 NFL Mock Draft–It is Time
By Paul Bretl
Pick 214: Mustafa Johnson, IDL, Colorado
In a perfect world, I would have gotten some defensive tackle help much earlier, but it’s not a very deep class, and as I already said, I can’t help how the board falls. But I like landing Johnson in Round 6. He was effective both as a pass-rusher and against the run, and in this new Joe Barry defense will align in the 3 or 4-tech.
Pick 220: Brenden Jaimes, OT, Nebraska
I really like the versatility and experience that Jaimes has. He was on the field for nearly 2,800 snaps at Nebraska, and over his final two years, he allowed just two sacks and 13 pressures. At the NFL level, he may be best suited at guard, but he gives you an option at tackle if you’re in a pinch. And as we’ve seen over the years, the Green Bay Packers have had a lot of success converting Day 3 tackles to guards.
Pick 256: Deommodore Lenoir, CB, Oregon
We will call this a happy coincidence. At this stage of the draft, it’s all about projected talent, and I thought Lenoir was one of the better players available, and he happens to play a position that could use some retooling. He was primarily a boundary corner at Oregon, with experience as a box defender, and is at his best in zone coverage, which we will see a lot of under Barry.
Final Thoughts
As I said in the beginning, I thought I struck a good balance of finding players who can help right away while still planning for the future. Moehrig and Brown will have decent-sized roles on this Green Bay Packers team immediately, while Christensen could be a Week 1 starter, and Joseph, Tremble, Smith, and Johnson could all contribute to varying degrees during their rookie seasons.
On top of that, I bolstered the offensive line depth, began restocking the receiver shelf for 2022, and even got a head start at tight end–that wasn’t my goal, but that’s how it played out.
If I could change one thing, it would be that I was unable to land some more immediate help at cornerback. Joseph could end up playing a large role this season, but I believe it’s best to bring him along slowly and allow him to grow into that role. With that said, the addition of Moehrig helps offset this.
