How these draft picks align with Gutey’s draft tendencies

Elite athletes: Over Gutey’s three drafts, only three of his selections have scored below an 8.0 on the RAS scoring table, so I afforded myself one pick to be below that metric–since there has been one selection in each class who was below that mark. That player was Osa Odighizuwa, who still scored a 7.64, so he wasn’t too far off. Every other pick scored at least an 8.0 or higher.

I’ll also note that Farley did not register a RAS score because he did not have a Pro-Day due to his surgery. However, I’m not concerned about where he would have scored; it’s easy to see that he has the athleticism that Gutey covets.

Three of the same position: Now, I didn’t exactly draft three CBs, at least not by how they are listed at their respective positions, but I did take three DBs. Coyle is listed as a safety but has plenty of slot experience and is someone who can be moved around. Farley and Thomas were my two other selections at DB.

Positional value in Round 1: I made sure to take not only one of the Green Bay Packers’ biggest needs but one of the more important positions in the game by selecting a CB in Round 1.

Trading up: By the early 20s, Farley was really the only player left who I would have considered worthy of trading up for. So staying aggressive as Gutekunst has been, I gave the Jets picks 29 and 178 for pick 23 so I could go and get him.

Rookies with Veterans: I do think Farley will start immediately, but even if he’s still shaking off some of the rust, the Green Bay Packers have Kevin King to lean on and to eat up snaps if needed. Every other player does not have to start right away. Now, we hope that they can make an early impact, but in true Gutekunst-fashion, it’s not a requirement.

Expect the unexpected: This one was tricky, but my attempt at this was drafting Boogie Basham in Round 2. With The Smiths as well as Gary on the roster for 2021, I could see there being some upset fans that Green Bay took an edge-rusher this early in the draft and someone who will be the fourth option come Week 1. But as I mentioned above, Basham can also play inside, and edge rusher could become a need in 2022.
