Packers Mock Draft Round 3 (92nd overall): Jamar Johnson, S, Indiana

This selection doesn’t necessarily jive with the “get Rodgers all the help” pattern of this draft, but there were a couple of incidents throughout this process where I nabbed defensive players for two reasons. 1. It was a player who slipped in the draft and was too good to pass up. 2. I wanted to make this realistic and still address Green Bay’s needs on that side of the ball.

Jamar Johnson definitely falls in the first category, as he’s projected to go in the second round, yet here he was toward the end of the third. Johnson would give the Packers a third safety who can excel in coverage in the slot and play as a single-high deep safety. That flexibility would allow Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage to play around the line of scrimmage and move all over the field.

Johnson does have to shore up his tackling as that was an issue throughout his collegiate career. He also doesn’t have much experience at the position and would benefit from continued coaching and playing time to work through some potential mistakes.
