Scenario 2: Green Bay Packers Stay Put

Pick 29: Eric Stokes, CB, Georgia

It’s no secret that the Green Bay Packers need to address the cornerback position in this year’s draft — preferably more than once — and even with staying put, I was able to land Eric Stokes, someone who can contribute and compete with Kevin King right away.

Standing 6’0″ and 194 pounds, Stokes had a very impressive Pro-Day, clocking in with a 4.25 on the 40-yard dash and a Relative Athletic Score of 9.99 out of 10. That alone is enough to put him on the Green Bay Packers board, as we all know that Gutey loves drafting elite athletes.

Stokes has taken nearly 1,600 snaps during his three-year career at Georgia, accumulating a completion percentage of just 53.4 percent on 118 targets and 9.7 yards per catch. He also gave up only three touchdowns and logged four interceptions along with 15 pass breakups. An impressive stat from his 2020 season is that Stokes had five games where he held his receiver to under 10 yards.

Stokes is primarily a boundary player, and he’s someone who can be effective in different defensive schemes, whether that be man or zone or playing press or off coverage. This ability would make him a nice fit in Joe Barry’s defense, which shows different looks pre-snap and asks that the defenders play various coverages.
