Packers: Predicting next contract for pending free agent Kevin King
Green Bay Packers‘ cornerback Kevin King was a divisive player during his time wearing the green and gold. He began his career with a lot of potential, but has failed to live up to the hype in a number of ways despite showing flashes of his top skills.
He started by falling to Green Bay in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. At the time, fans were hyped for this pick, as he had both the size (6-foot-3) and speed to dominate as an outside cornerback. It appeared health was the primary reason he fell to the 33rd overall pick.
Unfortunately, it turns out availability really is the best ability. King only played in 15 games through his first two seasons due to a variety of injuries. And those injuries may have negatively affected his learning curve as a young player.
Although he’s played in 26 games over the final two years, his inconsistency has been maddening. Sure, there have been games where he’s played really well and has made a number of big plays including late-game interceptions. Unfortunately, there have been way more times where he’s made huge mental mistakes that have costs the Packers big time. The negative portion of his game was on full display in the NFC Championship game when he made multiple mistakes including mistiming his jump on an early touchdown pass in the corner and then allowing his man to get behind him on a deep bomb late in the first half.
Green Bay Packers’ cornerback Kevin King is a free agent this offseason so let’s make a prediction about the next contract he’ll sign.
It’s unfortunate King went out in that fashion as it’s left a sour taste in fan’s mouths. However, that’s the reality and it’s incredibly unlikely King returns to the Packers. Whoever he signs with next will be getting a player with an opportunity to play the best football of his career. And that’s worth something considering most free agents are past their prime.
King won’t break the bank in free agency and he could very well sign a one-year prove-it deal. Whatever the length, expect the price to vary from $3-5 million.
Prediction: Two-years and $8 million
