Green Bay Packers Pick 92: Trill Williams, CB, Syracuse

Takeaway: In a perfect world, I would have loved to see the Green Bay Packers address the cornerback position in Round 1; however, that isn’t how things always work out in the draft. Cornerback is my top position of need as Green Bay has a hole to fill in Kevin King’s absence as well as not having much overall depth either.

Trill Williams brings good size and athleticism to the cornerback position, standing at 6’2″ -198 pounds, and he’s also a fairly experienced player as well, appearing in 28 games over his career, with 15 of them being starts and having nearly 700 coverage snaps.

In 2019, Williams was targeted 39 times, allowing a completion rate of 64.1 percent and 13.8 yards per catch with two touchdowns, an interception, and two pass breakups. In 2020, while a smaller sample size, Williams’ numbers improved. On 21 targets, he allowed a catch rate of 66.7 percent for only 9.5 yards per catch with one touchdown given up, an interception, and four pass breakups. Not to mention that his passer rating when targeted fell from 98.7 to 80.1.

Over his career, Williams has taken snaps out wide, but a majority of them have come in the slot. In today’s NFL, the nickel corner is essentially a starting position, and trying to upgrade or at least bring in some competition for Chandon Sullivan certainly isn’t a bad thing. With that said, when I say cornerback is the top need to fill, it’s because Green Bay doesn’t have a reliable running mate for Jaire Alexander.

And this selection doesn’t fill that huge need unless the Packers plan to move Williams to the boundary, which is what Joe Marino of The Draft Network expects to happen. In his pre-draft scouting report of Williams, he calls the cornerback “versatile,” having played in the box and at free safety, and Marino also says that his ideal role in the NFL is as the “wide corner.”
