Packers: 5 bold predictions for 2021 offseason
Packers restructure Aaron Rodgers and David Bakhtiari
This will be the most difficult pill for Green Bay to swallow. Although they can save significant money by restructuring both Aaron Rodgers and David Bakhtiari (more on the specifics in a moment), it will cost them a ton of future flexibility.
Let’s begin with Bakhtiari, who Green Bay just signed to a contract extension. As it stands, he’s set to count $16.2 million against the cap this season, but that number balloons to $23.5 million in 2023 and $27.5 million in 2024. If they restructure his deal, pushing money that’s owed to him this season down the road, that means his future cap numbers will grow even higher.
As for Rodgers, restructuring his deal is the best way to save money in 2021 and will signal their loyalty to him as their starting quarterback in the near future. Rodgers will count $37.2 million against the cap–the Packers’ highest number–this year, and Green Bay could shave $14.6 million off by redoing his contract.
