5) 1997 Season – Super Bowl XXXII (31-24 loss to Denver Broncos)

It’s the only loss in their five trips to the Big Game, so by default, this can be considered the Packers’ “worst” performance to date. While it was a pretty competitive game back and forth game, the Broncos played just good enough to finally get John Elway his ring. The Packers defense was never able to get to Elway and got run over by Terrell Davis on his record-setting night (157 yards and 3 rushing TDs).

Green Bay was on the wrong side of one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history in this game – the “helicopter run” by Elway that would eventually lead to a 1-yard score to give Denver a late third-quarter lead. Even at 37 years old at the time, Elway found a way through the defense that turned out to be a career and Super Bowl defining moment.

Overall it was a great season for the Packers that ended in disappointment. Finishing with a 13-3 record led by Brett Favre taking home his third straight league MVP award, they entered as double-digit favorites to defend their title and go back-to-back and had plenty of opportunities throughout the game to make it happen. Strong performances by Favre (256 yards and 2 TDs) and Antonio Freeman (126 yards and 2 TDs) kept them in the game but just came up short in the end.
