Green Bay Packers Load Up on Defense in TDN 2021 3-Round Mock Draft
By Paul Bretl
Green Bay Packers Round 3, Pick 92: Tyler Shelvin, IDL, LSU
Takeaway: Addressing the interior defensive line is another major need that the Packers have to tackle this offseason. The run game over the final month of the regular season really did play a lot better, but Kenny Clark still needs consistent help, and the position needs more depth.
Dean Lowry could be a cap casualty; while we don’t know if the Packers will bring back Montravius Adams, who is an unrestricted free agent, or Tyler Lancaster, who is a restricted free agent. Green Bay already didn’t have a lot of proven depth at this position, but losing one or two of the players just mentioned will deplete that depth even more.
Enter Tyler Shelvin, who at 6’3″ – 362 pounds, is a dynamic run defender. While having that size certainly helps, he also brings a well-polished game to the NFL as well. Shelvin opted-out of the 2020 season, but in 2019, he was the 13th highest graded run defender by Pro Football Focus out of 200 eligible interior defensive linemen.
This isn’t a particularly strong interior defensive lineman class overall, but landing a player like Shelvin in the third-round who could help the run defense right away seems like a worthwhile pick at this time.
