Defensive coordinator candidate to avoid 1: Jerry Gray

Jerry Gray is, perhaps, the most likely internal candidate to get a long, hard look from LaFleur. Gray has been around the NFL for a long time, first as a player then as a defensive coordinator (with the Buffalo Bills from 2001-05 and the Tennesee Titans from 2011-13). Most recently, he’s been the Packers’ defensive backs coach.

It’s no coincidence the Packers got a lot from their secondary this year, with Jaire Alexander, Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos experiencing amazing seasons. However, the Packers would be smart to let Gray stay in his current position instead of hire him to be the head man on defense.

In eight years as a defensive coordinator, his unit only finished in the top 10 of points allowed three times and yards twice. Oh, and it’s now been a decade since he manned that position. Although Gray has proven himself a quality coach, it’s best to leave well enough alone and look elsewhere for this job.
