Defensive coordinator candidate to avoid 2: James Bettcher

James Bettcher has made his appearance on a number of short lists for the Packers’ defensive coordinator position. However, there’s ample reason he no longer calls the shots for any defense.

Bettcher was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2015-2017 and for the New York Giants from 2018-2019. Unfortunately, after a strong first season with the Cardinals, Bettcher’s defenses never ranked in the top 13 in points allowed including 19th, 23rd and then 30th from 2017 to 2019 respectively. He also ranked 24th and 25th in yards allowed in New York.

It would be difficult to pry Bettcher away from the San Francisco 49ers where he just signed on to be a senior advisor. And LaFleur should keep it that way, as he wouldn’t be a promising hire.
