Green Bay Packers: 5 Things that went Wrong in Week 6 vs Bucs
By Paul Bretl
Rob Gronkowski
The Tampa Bay offense finished with some impressive rushing numbers, while Tom Brady’s passing stats were nothing to write home about. However, that was more so a product of this game being a blowout. When there was still a chance for Green Bay to come back — even a slim one — they couldn’t stop Rob Gronowski.
Brady finished the day with only 166 passing yards and two touchdowns, but about half of that production was to Gronk. The big tight end finished the day with five receptions on eight targets for 78 yards, or 15.6 yards per catch, along with a touchdown. And he was productive in all parts of the field.
Gronk has been a favorite target of Brady’s in the red zone this season, and I have to imagine the duo will look to exploit the middle of the Packer defense, which has had issues for much of the season. Now, if you’re looking for a silver lining, in Week 6, the Packers didn’t have Christian Kirksey or Kamal Martin available, Krys Barnes had far less experience than what he has now, and Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are currently playing at a completely different level.
Green Bay Packers run game
Once again, this was partially a product of being blown out, but when Aaron Jones has only 10 carries, and the Green Bay trio of running backs has only 19 carries total, it’s probably not going to be the best day for the offense.
Jones could hardly get anything going on the ground, finishing with only 15 rushing yards on those 10 carries. This time around against the Bucs, we need to see that same aggressiveness that we saw against Los Angeles and running between the tackles. Of Jones’ 10 carries, six of them were outside the tackles and testing those speedy Tampa Bay linebackers. This is not a good recipe for success.
On the other hand, Jamaal Williams had a 25-yard run, and AJ Dillon had a 20-yard run between the tackles. Now, it’s not as if it’s going to be easy running against this Bucs’ interior either, but Green Bay will likely find a lot more success in doing so.
Understandably, the game will dictate what plays are run and when, but this Sunday, we need to see Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers stick with the run game and, more importantly, pound the rock between the tackles as they did against Aaron Donald and the Rams.
