Green Bay Packers: Third Year Player Performance Grades
By Kenny Jilek
The third-year is where players are expected to make a big jump and be contributing, hopefully as a starter. So how have the Green Bay Packers’ third-year players been performing this season?
Rookie contracts for drafted players are four years, so in their third season, it’s time to prove that they were worth the pick. The first couple of years, guys can still be seen as a developing prospect with potential, but when it gets to year three, there are younger guys ready to take their spot, and they must show tangible value to the team if they want to stay on the roster. There are a few guys that have shown that ability and a few that need to improve, or the Green Bay Packers will have to make a tough decision about their future.
There are two guys in their third season who just haven’t done enough to warrant a grade. They are Tim Boyle and Hunter Bradley. Boyle hasn’t thrown a single pass or done much more than kneel at the end of the game. Bradley hasn’t had a botched snap, so that’s a positive, but they’re just simply aren’t enough stats on long-snapping to give him a grade.
There’s also Raven Greene, who was having a nice season before being injured. He was settling in well to his role as the Packers’ box safety and was making plays week after week. Before going down, he had 5 passes defended, 3 quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. He was probably on his way to a solid B- season had he not gotten injured.
There are a total of nine other third-year players on the roster, with six draftees and three that were undrafted coming out of college. We’ll start with the higher picks and move down to the list, ending with the undrafted guys.
