Packers’ AJ Dillon could be in line for huge game against Titans
Green Bay Packers’ rookie second round pick A.J. Dillon hasn’t seen much time in the backfield this year, but that could change against the Titans.
AJ Dillon turned heads in training camp when a photo that captured all his hard work in the weight room circulated on social media. Unfortunately, that’s the most work he’s received all season long after being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Dillon was a beast at Boston College where he ran for over 1100 yards in each of his three seasons and more than 1500 in two of them. He finished his collegiate career with a whopping 4382 total rushing yards and a 5.2 yard per rush average.
Unfortunately, things haven’t come quite as easy for him with the Packers. He’s been buried on the depth chart behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams–each of whom is set to become free agents in the offseason. With Jones and Williams doing the heavy lifting, there’s been little reason for Dillon to enter the game.
The rookie running back has never received more than five carries in a contest, and missed five straight games due to being on the covid-19 list. When he returned in Week 14 against the Detroit Lions he didn’t receive a single carry and only got one (that went for 18 yards) against the Carolina Panthers last week.
That could all change in the Packers’ vaunted Week 16 matchup against the Tennesee Titans.
When Green Bay released their injury report on Wednesday, both Williams and Jones appeared on the list. Williams didn’t practice with a quadriceps issue and Jones was limited due to a toe. As of now, there’s not much worry about Jones’ status for Sunday, but Williams could be hard-pressed to be ready to go.
If Williams is out and Jones is limited, Dillon could be in line for a huge day. The Titans defense has struggled at every level and they would certainly have a fit trying to deal with a big, bruising back like Dillon. He’s the perfect complement to Jones’ style.
Dillon only has 24 attempts for 115 yards (a 4.8 average) on the season. But if Jones and/or Williams misses the game, don’t be surprised for the rook to go off on Sunday.
