Milwaukee Bucks: 3 Keys to Re-signing Giannis Antetokounmpo
By Matt LeVene
Jrue Holiday
The Milwaukee Bucks’ newly acquired point guard could play a vital role in deciding the franchise’s fate for the next decade. That is a bold claim for a guy that has yet to play a regular season minute for the team, but the Bucks leveraged a lot of future assets to acquire him.
Holiday should bring with him a sizable increase in offensive production from the point guard spot as well as a tenacious defensive mindset that could propel the Bucks to a title run. So how does this all work into the Giannis extension? I’m glad you asked.
Giannis and Holiday’s contracts are aligned in a way that makes this season one of the most important in franchise history. Holiday comes to the Bucks with this season left on his contract and a $27 million player option for the 2021-2022 season. Holiday could opt-out and leave Milwaukee after this season if it is not a success. This makes the 2020-2021 campaign even more consequential.
The doomsday scenario of both Holiday and Antetokounmpo leaving is a scary thought for Bucks fans. So, in my opinion, the best route to keep the new Big 3 of Giannis, Middleton, and Holiday in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future would be to extend Holiday as soon as possible. Investing in Holiday may be seen as investing in the winning, which may help sway Giannis to re-sign sooner rather than later. The Milwaukee Bucks new ‘Marquee Three” will be fun to watch this season, and hopefully for many more to come.
The newly added dynamic of Jrue Holiday and his contract add a unique piece to the Giannis equation. If the Bucks act proactively, this could be used to their advantage.
