The Milwaukee Bucks have a number of options for their starting shooting guard position so let’s rank their top five players for the job.

With the Milwaukee Bucks tipping-off their 2020-21 preseason schedule on Saturday with a home game against the Dallas Mavericks, they have plenty of questions left to be answered. One of their biggest question marks is who will fill in for Wesley Matthews (who departed to the Los Angeles Lakers via free agency) on the wing.

Milwaukee returns three starters from a year ago–Brook Lopez, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton–while also adding Jrue Holiday to their first unit. This foursome is as strong as any in the league and figures to give the Bucks one of the best starting lineups. However, we don’t know for sure who will fill in the final spot.

None of these options may be as good as Matthews (who wasn’t as good as Malcolm Brogdon), but they each present their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Let’s rank the five players who could potentially earn the starting nod.

5. Pat Connaughton

Despite head coach Mike Budenholzer’s affliction for Pat Connaughton, it’s unlikely he’s able to make his way into the starting lineup. Connaughton is a great ninth player off the bench; he plays hard, rebounds well for his position, hustles and has no issue diving on the floor or giving up his body. He’s also more versatile on defense than you may think. However, he’s limited offensively–especially behind the arc–and wouldn’t bring what the Bucks need in their starting lineup to either side of the court. It’s best to keep him as one of the last guys in your rotation.
