Contract Extensions

A contract extension to a worthy player is another way to lower the cap hit in that particular season. Once again, it is a way to restructure the player’s deal, oftentimes making the contract very cash-heavy during that current season with a hefty signing bonus and lower salary while adding years to the contract as well, thus allowing teams to spread the cap hit out over a longer period of time.

Players, of course, want to do this because it gives them more guaranteed money with the larger signing bonus as well as more security with a longer contract.

There is one player for Green Bay who could and should receive a contract extension in 2021, and that is Davante Adams, who will be in the final year of his contract. Pete Dougherty calculates that the Packers could save roughly $5 million in cap space next offseason by extending Adams.

So while the upcoming offseason’s reduced salary cap is a hot topic of conversation, it’s not all doom and gloom as there are a few ways that the Green Bay Packers can create cap space. Now that isn’t to say that it’s going to be easy, and certainly difficult decisions will be made, but the Packers are in good hands with Gutey and Ball at the helm.
