Tackling and Limiting the YAC

Tackling, or the lack thereof, has been a major issue for the Green Bay Packers all season long. Their 72 missed tackles are the eight most in football, and their 7.9 missed tackles per game are the seventh most. Fortunately, they’ve overcome that for the most part as they are 7-2 on the season. However, against the Colts, this could become a major issue.

As I alluded to on the first slide, under Phillip Rivers, this is a Colts’ offense that is perfectly fine dinking and dunking their way down the field as they orchestrate an 11 play scoring drive. This is an offense built on quick completions and racking up yards after the catch.

Through nine games, Indianapolis has recorded 1,213 yards after the catch, which is the fifth most in football, and their average of 5.6 yards after the catch per completion is the third most. It’s no secret, Rivers is going to look for those quick, easy passes, and it’ll be up to his Green Bay defense to all swarm to the ball carrier and bring him down on the first attempt. If they can, it’s going to force Rivers to go downfield more, which again, could lead to a turnover or two.
