The Green Bay Packers could release these four players in 2021 in order to save money with a reduced salary cap coming next year.

Following the Green Bay Packerscontract extension with David Bakhtiari, general manager Brian Gutekunst had a number of interesting comments regarding the 2021 season. Comments that potentially hinted at the Packers walking away from a number of key players they normally wouldn’t in order to save money.

Gutekunst talked about prioritizing cap flexibility this offseason, as Green Bay could target a number of players who might not be available in a normal offseason. Remember, the 2021 salary cap is projected to drop to around $175 million due to the effects of covid-19, and almost every team will be in a sticky situation with veterans on their roster. A situation that could lead to a number of guys getting let go who would normally have stuck around. That prompts us to check out four current Packers who could be covid cap casualties in 2021.

4. Dean Lowry

It’s safe to say Dean Lowry is having another disappointing campaign for the Packers this season. His PFF grade of 52.7 indicates a drop in his production for the third straight year and ranks 99th out of 124 eligible defensive linemen.

Lowry is set to count $6.3 million against the cap next season, but Green Bay could cut that number in half if they release him. If the Packers waive him by June 1, they will eat $3 million of his salary, but will save themselves $3.3 million. At this point, he’s not bringing anything to the table and the Packers have cheaper alternatives on the defensive line in Kingsley Keke and Montravius Adams.
