Green Bay Packers: 3 Defensive Linemen to Target at Trade Deadline
By Paul Bretl
Dalvin Tomlinson – New York Giants
Dalvin Tomlinson is a former second-round pick out of Alabama in 2017 and is in the final year of his rookie deal. This is a New York Giants team that still has some serious work to do if they hope to be a playoff contender in the near future, and with Leonard Williams already in the middle of their defensive front, that makes Tomlinson expendable.
Tomlinson is never going to be a player who fills the stat sheet with pressures or sacks; that’s just not what he’s asked to do. At 6’3″ – 317 pounds, Tomlinson is a run stuffer and a fairly good one at that. While Quinnen Williams ranks second among interior defensive linemen in run stop rate, Tomlinson isn’t very far behind, coming in at 12th. And his 16 total run stops are the most in the NFL. There’s no question that he would be an upgrade for this Packer run defense.
Currently in the final year of his rookie deal, and with a base salary of only $1.08 million that would be pro-rated, Tomlinson’s contract is easily affordable for the cap conscious Green Bay Packers. However, given the cap situation and the fact that the Packers have several of their own free agents to tend to in 2021, there’s a very good chance that Tomlinson would be a rental for the remainder of the 2020 season.
However, for a late Day 2 or perhaps a pair of Day 3 draft picks, it’s a worthwhile move, especially when we consider the comp picks that the Packers will be receiving in 2021.
