4 offensive players Packers should trade for before it’s too late
With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Green Bay Packers should consider trading for one of these four offensive players.
The NFL trade deadline is quietly sneaking up on us, as it’s just a couple of weeks away on November 3rd. Although the Green Bay Packers have been historically quiet in the trade department, will they pursue a deal before it’s too late?
After failing to make any major splashes in the offseason, Green Bay was clicking on all cylinders before running into the brick wall that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense. It’s clear Green Bay could still use another playmaker on the offensive side of the ball and these following offensive players are seemingly available to be moved for one reason or another.
4. Zach Ertz, tight end
The Packers are slim at tight end, but have been getting surprising contributions from players like Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan. However, third-round pick Josiah Deguara is out for the year and Lewis is battling injuries. That could open the door to pursuing a proven tight end and shore up the position moving forward.
Zach Ertz tried to secure a new contract in the offseason, but the Philadelphia Eagles halted negotiations. That could mean Philly is ready to move on from him, especially with Dallas Goedert impressing early. If Green Bay wants a rental to boost their prospects of winning a Super Bowl, Ertz could be a target.
3. David Njoku
Sticking with tight ends, Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku could be an interesting target as the deadline nears. He requested a trade in the offseason after they signed Austin Hooper, but that has quietly disappeared from memory. He’s under contract for 2021, which could make him a bit more attractive for Green Bay, but he’s far less proven than Ertz. Still, his versatility is something Matt LaFleur prioritizes in his tight ends and he could be a nice compliment in the passing game.
2. AJ Green
Once one of the top wide receivers in the game, injuries and age have sapped AJ Green of his dominance. Still, he’d be the second-best receiver on the Packers’ roster and he fits the size Brian Gutekunst likes to target in players at this position. A viral clip of Green giving up on a play that led to an interception has made its waves in recent weeks, turning many off from trading for the disgruntled receiver. However, a change of scenery could provide exactly the type of motivation he needs.
1. Julio Jones
The Atlanta Falcons could be on the verge of blowing it up after they fired their head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Oh, and they’re also 0-5. If they want to jumpstart their rebuild, they could get a nice haul for Jones, still one of the best receivers in the game when he’s healthy. The downside is he’s struggled with injuries lately, including a hamstring issue this season. If Green Bay wants to dip their toes in the water and explore this trade market, nobody would blame them.
