The Green Bay Packers will likely be without one of their starters for a number of weeks following his Week 3 injury against the New Orleans Saints.

The Green Bay Packers were already missing starters Davante Adams and Kenny Clark for Sunday night’s Week 3 showdown against the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, they received more bad news on the injury front as starting inside linebacker Christian Kirksey went down with a shoulder injury and will reportedly be out for at least one week according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Kirksey suffered a shoulder injury during the game and Demovsky reports he’ll be out at least one week according to his sources. The Packers play the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night and have a bye the following week. Although surgery is unlikely and it’s not considered season-ending, its also a possibility he could end up on the injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least three weeks.

That would be a tough blow for Green Bay who will now be down their top two players at an extremely thin position. They lost Kamal Martin, a 2020 fifth-round pick, in training camp and he’s expected to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Now without Kirksey, Green Bay will be in an incredibly tough spot at the position.

Before the Saints’ game, Ty Summers hadn’t played a single snap on defense in the NFL. Although he flew all over the field, he missed a few tackles and his inexperience was evident as New Orleans gained a ton of yards after the catch.

Krys Barnes, an undrafted free agent, is the other primary option. Barnes received playing time behind Kirksey this season, but stepping in full-time will prove to be even more challenging. Former third-round pick Oren Burks appears to have fallen completely out of favor.

Whoever fills Kirksey’s shoes will also have to step in as the signal-caller for the Packers’ defense, adding yet another challenge to an already difficult position. Communication will be essential for everyone.

Kirksey, who has struggled with injuries over the past two years, appears to be the only major injury suffered by a Packers’ player in Week 3. Hopefully, Adams, Clark and others such as Josiah Deguara and Randy Ramsey will be cleared to play against the Falcons in Week 4.
