Green Bay Packers: 3 X-Factors Against New Orleans
By Paul Bretl
Robert Tonyan
No Davante Adams for the Green Bay Packers means others have to step up in the passing game. Of course, this includes Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Aaron Jones, but another player that I believe can have a big game against this Saints’ defense is Robert Tonyan.
Through two games this season, it has been Tonyan, not Jace Sternberger, who has led this Packer team in snaps at the tight end position. And with Sternberger’s recent drops along with Josiah Deguara looking like he will miss another game, I don’t expect that to change. Last week against Detroit, Tonyan had two receptions for 25 yards with a touchdown.
In New Orleans Week 1 matchup with Tampa Bay, the Bucs’ tight ends caught six of ten passes for 47 yards with a touchdown. This past week, The Las Vegas tight ends, particularly Darren Waller, had a huge game, totaling 14 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown.
Now, I don’t expect Tonyan to have a Darren Waller type performance by any means, but in this small sample size, we’ve seen tight ends have success against this Saints defense. So if Tonyan can exploit this matchup as others have, he will provide the Green Bay Packers’ offense with a nice boost.
