Green Bay Packers: 5 biggest surprises from initial 53-man roster
4. Yosh Nijman, offensive tackle
Boy, do the Packers have question marks at offensive tackle. After they let Bryan Bulaga walk in free agency this offseason, they brought in former Wisconsin Badger and Detroit Lion Rick Wagner. Wagner is serviceable, but has struggled with injuries throughout his career–similar to Bulaga.
Wagner suffered an injury early in training camp and missed a bit of time, prompting Billy Turner to take the lead at right tackle with Lane Taylor completing his impressive summer and earning time at right guard. However, with Wagner back, Turner is now questionable for Week 1.
That brings us to Yosh Nijman, who spent most of camp injured and unable to practice. Despite his limited opportunities, Green Bay must really like the massive tackle, as they chose to keep him on their roster over the next guy on this list despite being an undrafted free agent and no other teams having NFL film on him. Nijman has a decent ceiling, but we’ll see if he sticks on the roster with Jared Veldheer lurking in the shadows.
