Green Bay Packers Roundtable: 3 Surprise Cut Candidates
Paul Bretl: Jake Kumerow
That’s right, I’m putting Jake Kumerow on this list. As a UW-Whitewater grad, he’s a fan favorite and Aaron Rodgers has spoken very highly of him. However, he’s the oldest receiver on this team at nearly 30-years-old, and I find it very telling that even with the underwhelming performances that the Green Bay Packers had at the receiver position in 2019, he still saw just 21 targets last season.
While we don’t exactly know how targets among the receiver group – outside of Davante Adams and Allen Lazard – will shake out this year, we do have a good idea of what the receiver room will look like. At this point, Adams, Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Tyler Ervin will be on the 53-man roster. So if the Packers decide to keep six receivers, that leaves just one spot for Kumerow, Reggie Begelton, Darrius Shepherd, or Malik Turner.
Begelton hasn’t been flashy but he’s been reliable through camp while Shepherd has once again caught the eye of Matt LaFleur. When deciding on who is going to be your sixth receiver, why not go with the upside of Begelton or Shepherd over what we’ve seen from Kumerow, which is 20 receptions in two seasons.
Now, having said all of that, two things that Kumerow has in his favor is that he is a very good run blocker, which is important to LaFleur, and he’s familiar with the offense in what has been a shortened offseason. Maybe that’s enough to keep him on the 53-man, but the point of this article was to pick a surprise cut. So here you go.
