Tyler Ervin

Last year after being signed as a free agent with about a month left in the season, Tyler Ervin came in and rescued the Green Bay Packers’ historically bad punt return unit. However, we also saw him take some snaps on offense in a gadget role, and there were a few plays that standout – one in Detroit and one against Seattle – where Ervin almost broke-off two huge plays.

Now back and gearing up for the 2020 season, of course, the return game is going to be a big part of Ervin’s job here in Green Bay, but from the looks of it early on, he’s also going to play a bigger role on offense as well.

Although listed as a running back in 2019, Ervin has reportedly spent all of training camp up to this point working with the receivers. This shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise considering the Packers have a backfield made up of Aaron Jones, Jamaal Wiliams, and A.J. Dillon, not to mention that Ervin primarily lined up as a receiver last season when on offense.

So whether he’s listed as a running back or a receiver, that doesn’t matter much. What matters is that he’s a playmaker with the ball in his hands, and LaFleur is going to give him opportunities to showcase what he can do:

"“He’s an explosive player,” LaFleur said. “He’s pretty elusive. We have (offensive coach) Adam Stenavich, who was his O-line coach for a year at San Jose State. He’s been in our ear about what type of playmaker ‘Swerve’ – as we like to call him – can be. We’re just going to continue to try to give him opportunities to see what he can do.”"

Earlier this offseason, LaFleur mentioned that creating more explosive plays was on the team’s to-do list and for a receiver group that struggled to make plays after the catch in 2019, one player who can provide some help in that area is Tyler Ervin.
