Robert Tonyan

As a former college receiver, Robert Tonyan has the physical ability to be a weapon in the passing game for the Green Bay Packers. However, he’s spent his first two seasons with the team at the bottom of the depth chart learning all of the nuances that come with the tight end position in the NFL.

Now in his third season in Green Bay, Tonyan has become a willing blocker and flashed that playmaking ability in his limited playing time. With veteran Jimmy Graham no longer on the team, there are plenty of snaps available at the tight end position this season.

While the assumption is that Jace Sternberger will be TE1 this year, when asked if Tonyan had a chance to take over that role, without hesitation, LaFleur replied, “absolutely.”

And so far through the first week of camp, Tonyan has shown that he should at least be considered for that top tight end spot, once again making plays in the passing game.

But regardless of who is TE1 and who is TE2, both Sternberger and Tonyan are going to see plenty of playing time this season with how important the tight end position is in the LaFleur offense along with how often two tight end sets will be utilized.

So just maybe, 2020 is the breakout season from Bobby Tonyan that we’ve all been waiting for.

"“We feel really good about Bobby,” LaFleur said. “I will tell you, he worked extremely hard this offseason. You can tell, his body, he looks like he’s in great shape. He’s got a much better understanding of what we’re trying to do on the offensive side of the football. Again, it’s going to be a competitive situation for not only that room but for every position on this team.”"
