Green Bay Packers: 3 Surprises from Start of Training Camp
With the Green Bay Packers starting Training Camp over the weekend, here are three surprises worth noting from the first practice.
The Green Bay Packers kicked off Training Camp on Saturday with their first practice which is quite the accomplishment after all the uncertainties surrounding the season. With a lot left to accomplish, there were already a few surprises worth noting.
3. AJ Dillon
A photo of Packers’ rookie running back AJ Dillon went viral on Saturday after ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky captured him on the sideline. Dillon, a second-round pick out of Boston College, is known as a powerful runner and this photo certainly backs up this notion.
Green Bay is hoping to use Dillon as thunder to Aaron Jones’ lightning. Where Jones relies more on quickness and speed, Dillon can punish defenders who step into the hole and try to tackle him. It will be fun to see how he fares when the regular season begins, but this photo could just be the beginning of his hype machine.
2. Josiah Deguara
After Josiah Deguara was selected in the third round of this year’s draft, a lot of critics were wondering if Green Bay really used a Day 2 selection on a fullback. The Packers were enamored with his versatility to line up at multiple positions on the field, something that’s valued in Matt LaFleur’s offense. On Day 1, Deguara reportedly lined up as a fullback and tight end, something worth keeping an eye on moving forward.
1. Right Tackle
One of the biggest question marks for the Packers this season is at right tackle. After Bryan Bulaga departed in free agency, they signed Ricky Wagner to apparently fill his position. However, it appears Billy Turner will actually get the first crack at right tackle if the first day of practice is any indication.
Turner, a starter at right guard last year, slid over to right tackle for the initial portion of practice with Lane Taylor getting the reps at right guard. Taylor started at left guard for the first two games last season before Elgton Jenkins took over as the full-time starter.
The right side of the offensive line is far from settled, with Turner also getting playing time at right guard with Wagner entering at tackle. It appears this is a fluid situation and the coaching staff will take the entire training camp to evaluate their performances to see who can come out on top.
