Receiving Tight Ends

Now to the quality that most people care about in a tight end, catching the football. It’s the most exciting part of the game and easily the most visible in any broadcast. Both of these guys can do it.

Robert Tonyan

After over a season on the practice squad, Tonyan made the team in 2018 but hasn’t been a huge factor. His role did grow from 2018 to 2019, though, as he went from playing only 6 percent of snaps played up to 18.

He has caught a touchdown in both years, the one in 2018 being a 54-yard bomb from Aaron Rodgers against the Seahawks. Tonyan is a natural receiver and played out wide for most of his college career. At 6’5″, he has height on almost any defender and is fast enough to beat a lot of linebackers.

Even with his role not looking like it will be huge in 2020, he still has a high chance to make the roster and at least make some contribution to every game.

Best Case Stats: 30 receptions, 400 yards, 3 touchdowns

Worst Case Stats: 10 receptions, 80 yards, 1 touchdown

Jace Sternberger

Jace Sternberger missed almost his entire rookie season due to an injury, but came back and caught a touchdown pass in the NFC Championship game against the 49ers. With the departure of Jimmy Graham and no acquisitions to replace him in free agency, it seems like the plan is for Sternberger to be the starter.

As a third-round pick last year, some viewed him as possibly the best receiving tight end in the draft. The possibilities for Sternberger are sky high, and he is one of the biggest X-factors for this offense’s success. The Green Bay Packers are depending on him to be the guy this year.

Like Deguara, he’ll have every opportunity to take reps with the first team and show that he’s the guy they thought they were getting when they drafted him last year. Even if he isn’t fantastic, he’s still their best tight end option, so his floor for this season is pretty high statistically.

Best Case Stats: 60 receptions, 650 yards, 6 touchdowns

Worst Case Stats: 30 receptions, 400 yards, 2 touchdowns
