Packers Keep John Lovett

We know that the Matt LaFleur and Kyle Shanahan offenses mirror each other fairly closely. And one of the more important players on that San Francisco team is Kyle Juszczyk, who Shanahan has called irreplaceable.

Juszczyk wears many hats in that Niners’ offense and transitions from one role to the next with ease. He’s effective both in the passing game, as a blocker, and he has the versatility to line up all over the formation. This is how the Green Bay Packers want to utilize third-round draft pick, Josiah Deguara.

However, asking a rookie to handle all of the responsibilities that come with being an H-back in an offseason where everything was held virtually, practice time is limited, and preseason games don’t exist, is a tall task and really not a fair one either.

While I still fully expect Deguara to be a factor in the offense, it won’t be to the fullest extent. Enter John Lovett, who the Packers just claimed off waivers from Kansas City.

Coming out of Princeton, Lovett was a do-it-all quarterback that was on the Chiefs’ roster as a tight end in 2019. Although he was on IR all season, he brings that versatile skill-set that plays such an important role in the LaFleur offense. And it’s because Lovett can fill that H-back role, that I’m predicting that he makes the final roster.

Although this is only his second NFL season, he’s still been in practices, in film sessions, and played in preseason games, which isn’t a ton of experience by any means, but in odd offseason, every little bit helps.

As I said, Lovett isn’t going to replace Deguara, but rather compliment the rookie who is making a difficult transition, while also giving Matt LaFleur some insurance at a key position.
