Roster Longshots

The Green Bay Packers are currently carrying seven running backs, leaving these three guys as outsiders looking in at a roster spot. They are Dexter Williams, Damarea Crocket, and Patrick Taylor.

Dexter Williams was drafted in the sixth round of the draft last year and was making a strong showing early in the preseason, finding cutback lanes in the Packers zone scheme and exploding through his cuts. Then, he mishandled a handoff from Tim Boyle, dropped a screen pass, and it seemed that the coaching staff lost faith in him.

Without another preseason to prove himself, he’s fighting an uphill battle. That sentiment goes for all three of these guys, as it will be tough to show what they can do without that live game action.

Damarea Crockett was an undrafted free agent last year that latched on with the Green Bay Packers as a practice squad guy. He will probably end up on the practice squad again, but he might even have to fight for that spot with the possibility of Dexter Williams being relegated there.

Finally, Patrick Taylor is an undrafted rookie who’s most interesting trait is that he played some wildcat quarterback at Memphis and has some nice explosiveness and power.

For all three of these guys, the best outcome is carving out a roster spot, probably as a special teams player and then trying to slowly move up from there. If Williams gets cut and assigned to the practice squad, he could get picked up by another team, and that is almost definitely the best thing that could happen to him as he’s blocked here with three guys in front of him.

Crockett and Taylor may even have to fight for a spot on the practice squad, and maybe even getting the opportunity to play football in 2020 after being undrafted is the best thing that could happen to either of them.
