Packers: 6 Potential Cinderella Stories in 2020 Training Camp
Could these six members of the Green Bay Packers defy the odds and make a true cinderella story come to life by making the roster?
There are always surprises across the NFL’s roster landscape, especially when training camp gets underway. And this year should be as unpredictable as ever. Let’s take a look at six Green Bay Packers‘ who could write their own fairytale and earn a spot on the final roster.
6. Cole Madison, OL
After being selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Cole Madison missed his entire first season due to personal reasons. He’s now coming off a torn ACL and this could be his final chance. Green Bay drafted three offensive linemen in this year’s class, adding to Madison’s competition. However, it would be quite the story if he could recover from all that and still earn a spot on the roster.
5. Curtis Bolton, ILB
The Packers’ inside linebacker position is as weak as ever heading into the 2020 season, leaving the door wide-open for anyone and everyone. With newcomer Christian Kirksey expected to start, there’s a battle for his primary backup position that could be Curtis Bolton’s to win. Bolton had a strong summer last season before his season ended prematurely with a knee injury. If he comes back equally as strong, he could make a surprise push for playing time.
4. James Looney, TE
What a story it would be if James Looney, who was drafted in the seventh round in 2018 as a defensive lineman and has never caught a pass, somehow makes it onto Green Bay’s roster. Looney brings athleticism to a position that has no sure answers. He could make enough waves at the bottom of the position to sneak onto the final roster.
3. Darrius Shepherd, WR
The undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State had an impressive preseason campaign in 2019, earning him a spot on the practice squad. Now that he has a year in the Packers’ system under his belt, he hopes to be even better this time around. His talents in the return game should also help his cause.
2. Ka’dar Hollman, CB
With Tramon Williams still on the free agent market, Green Bay is hoping their young corners can step up. Ka’dar Hollman brings some more speed to the position and lasted the entire 2019 season on the roster. If he can take a nice Year 2 leap, he could earn some playing time on defense.
1. Reggie Begelton, WR
Reggie Begelton put up huge numbers in the CFL, but, as they say, this ain’t the CFL. He’s behind the eight-ball to begin with since there have been no organized team activities this offseason and he has a lot of catching up to do to wide receivers with experience in the NFL. We know he can produce–now he just has to show he can produce in the world’s best football league.
